Researching for a game I have come across a blank wall. Even google cannot help me (largely I think though because I don't know what I am searching for).

I want to find out what would have been worn in 1856 by a scholar/writer, particularly more casual clothing rather than goign out clothing. Pictures would be ideal but descriptions would be great. Specific names of the items of clothing they wear would also allow me to do better searching myself than just narrowing it down to "victorian" which was, after all, quite a large time period. :)

If anybody can point me in the right direction I would be delighted and will happily dedicate an LJ entry to you.

Thank you.

I find The Costumer's Manifesto wonderful for stuff like this. Specifically, here's their page about the Victorian period - there are sections on menswear, and links categorised by decade.
