Real life Project Gotham Racing

Sometimes some things are so tempting. In oxford one of the roundabouts is having gardening work done and they have a ring of cones around it that they use to block off some of the traffic. Unfortunately every time I go round this roundabout I think about the style challenges in project gotham racing. In these you have to skid round corners as stylishly as possible without hitting any of the cones on the track. I have to reists the temptation and I don't think I will if any of the songs of the game's soundtrack came on my stereo while I was on the roundabout.

Its true, computer games *are* dangerous. :)

I stopped playing Carmageddon when I was stopped at some lights, a little old lady crossed in front of me, and I had a sudden (albeit brief) urge to stomp on the gas...

And if I pull out... now, I'll just clip his rear bumper, causing a nice spin, while I turn off in the other direction and go down the road.

Worse, however, was driving down a country road, after playing to much Colin McCrae Rally to have my passenger say "straight, 60, right 3". He was right: I could take the right-hander at 60mph(*). It was the immediately following left hander that turned out to be the problem.


(*) Fortunately, I was the only person who could actually feel the wheels losing grip. There goes the left front; oops. left rear; and the right rear. Oh good. the left front has caught again...

I really enjoyed Carmageddon and never had the urge to run over little old ladies, however, I was thinking above line. ;o)

Funnily enough (life being about coincidences and all) I've just bought PGR myself. I was on my way to dinner with Laura this evening when a couple of boy racers hared round a corner in front of me in a Ford Focus (not a Cosworth, unfortunately). Sad to say that a little Kudos counter at the corner of my minds eye started counting up as their rear wheels briefly lost traction... They only managed 9, but they banked it...

I was amused by the carnage this has been causing. Cycled home mid-morning to pick up something I had forgotton, and there appeared to be a bus with a delivery van crashed into it. And a huge lorry (sort of thing that carries road surface stuff) managed to flatten 3 cones as it tried to get around them.
