Last few mornings I've been woken by my phone ringing. I never get to it in time but the people phoning are always kind enough to leave an answer phone message. The problem I have with this is that the calls are at about 5AM (give or take a few minutes) and the answer phone messages seem to be in a foreign language (possibly indian but there are probably loads of similar sounding languages).

I'm wondering if this is going to keep happening or if they'll give up. I figure I'm off home for christmas soon anyway but if it does keep going I'm not sure what the correct course of action would be. I was going to try just phoning BT and seeing if they could help out with it somehow... Its that or just disconnecting my phone before bed every night but that seems sub-optimal...

Ah you signed up with the telephone preference service? Not sure if it would help with this particular problem, but in general its good for stopping unsolicited calls in my experience.

Also try searching for your phone number on google and see if it was used for something else (Indian restaurant?) prior to being assigned to you - might give some kind of insight into who might be calling you.

I assume you've also tried 1471-ing, but if I recall that won't give you international numbers - still if it does work then it would give you more info on who they might be...

5am sounds like something going wrong. Can't believe it's a good time for telesales.

As for TPS, sign up to it, some of the do care...

Ah - I had a vaguely similar problem for a while (about four months). A guy kept ringing my phone (which I use as a portable phone box so is almost always switched off) leaving messages for "Terry". They started as polite little messages and reminders and then became slightly more ranty as Terry apparently wasn't returning his calls (!). Eventually he rang when I had it switched on and I corrected the mistake. I've still had the odd message since then, but he's mostly remembered that he got the number wrong.

However, in your case it looks like you'd need to be awake at 5am (and to have a common language), so let's hope they figure it out on their own.

We get a load of spam calls from India, but they're always in English and during our daytime, so clearly people who know what they're doing. Yours may just be bewilderingly incompetent. Leaving a scary answerphone message yourself might help?
