Hmmmm... I don't have anything exciting to post today. Intead I may mention that I have recetly started playing World of Warcrackft. Ive been trundling my way through for the last fortnight and am currently a level 22 warrior. Last night I went on my first big instance run and was reminded of one of the reasons I dislike MMOs - the people.

Looking for a group to go through the deadmines with my first respondant was a L16 something. Now this is reccomendded for levels 17-25 or something like that and he was 5 levels lower than me. OK. I've got no other choices at the moment. Then he tells me that he's found somebody else and to make him leader so he can invite. And so the party is joined by the level 47 hunter. Ummmm... from one end of the scale straight to the other extreme!

Eventually I say to them "look, I'm not here to be handheld through a dungeon but to have a challenge" and leave the group along with somebody else with much the same attitude. We team up and then find some others. One of them invites me to a guild and through a fit of curiosity I accept. My new guild mate says he is experienced and can tell me what I need because their other character is a warrior. I think their other character's name might be Leeroy Jenkins. I thought I was the main tank which means that I am the one who the bad guys should be hitting. However, Leeroy decided that the best course of action was to run in and attack loads of people i the middle of the room meaning that, well, they all attacked back. Now one at a time careful tactics for us, just good old solid being pounded on by the bad guys.

I ponder briefly if I should stop being so nervous. I've never done it before, surely its not possible for me to still be the most experienced person, right? Before long this person leaves for reasons I'm not clear on. It might have been because it was a lame group though. Another guy, then leaves at this point because there's no point. Luckily at this stage we advertise and get a couple of new people in and we then have a competent group (though not optimal).

Once we had it right it was really fun. I already learned a lot about what not to do and what to do and it was generally fun. We didn't get through it though, mainly due to somebody needing to go and we decided that given we'd just wiped with four that three wasn't going to work. And yeah, we started five but were down to four at this stage and I have *no* idea where the other guy got off to or when. I just suddenly realised we were playing with only four. And still kicking ass. :) I have high hopes for tonight...

Oh, and I forgot to mention these dungeons have a special meeting stone. If you are looking for a group you activate this stone and you join the group preparing to go down. I did this when first looking and found myself in a party with a couple of foreign speakers (tenative guess of portugese). I was relating my escapades to somebody else who was expressing their great surprise that somebody had used the meeting stone. There surprise was entirely justified when about five minutes after leaving the party (didn't fancy trying it with people I couldn't understand) I got a message saying "Sorry, we never had any intent to go into the Deadmines". So basically they basically couldn't get to grips with the game features.

I'm really glad I did find some competent people in the end otherwise I might have been on my way out of another MMO. In games like this where you *have* to work together with people in places like this it can really put you off the game if all you find are the kind of people that Leeroy at you or any of the others mentioned in this list of Incorrigible Personality Types you might end up with.

Ah, well. I've got the name of the healer in the group who i thought was very competent.

Anyway, bring on tonights attempt...

I've been playing Evercrack^H^H^H^H^Hquest for over four years now (although my main character has only reached level 52 (out of 70!) which shows how seriously I was addicted really. I love it, it's great fun, but with the baby about don't really have time to play anymore, I suspect I'm going to cancel my account. IN a few years time when I have a bit more time back, I might look at starting again, or maybe joining whatever new is happening then.

(To clarify: Ryzom community is amazing. Well, on the mainland anyway. Free trial island experiences may vary due to people attracted to free trials... but I digress. No worries of hitting level 60/70 and being bored by the grind for "uber gear" here!)

Ahh yes... the trial was a problem. So there is a new one now. They have created a new starter area + tutorial/story introduction section. Very cool!

I think you had the opposite experience to me. My first DM run was near flawless thanks to a quickly found well-balanced party. I'm sure it gets better at higher levels too (although the first instances past the Deadmines aren't tremendously easy to get a group for), as there always seem to be people looking for groups for them, and by that level they should have a bit more clue...

Just don't do what I did and get so involved in your role you miss the main objective of the dungeon and have to rerun it a week later to get the shiny stuff. That's annoying. :-)

[Goes off to ponder how to make money without levelling too fast]

Exactly. My enchanting has been sucking up money. I'm about to hit L35 with 16 or 17 gold. I need to farm something.

At one point I was regularly tripping over a level 15 fighter who was trying to tag along with me (as a level 22 warlock) into areas that were level 21 or so. And, of course, pulling all the monsters, which then ate both of us. He'd done all the easier quests by coat-tailing on other higher level characters, and his playing abilities were much worse than his character level.

I pretty much stopped doing instance runs, for approximately this reason. Deadmines, Stormwind Stockade, and Gnomeregan. Of, and Scarlet Monastory once.

On the other hand, it's quite entertaining when your level 18 Paladin Guildmates have a class quest which takes them to Shadowfang keep. And you happen to be a level 50 rogue. I so kicked arse ;-)

I get the impression that 'totally uncontrolled mayhem' is the order of the day for WoW parties. If you want a party that's a carefully synchronised fighting machine, with everyone knowing their job, working for the benefit of the team and keeping the situation under control at all times, you want to go back to FFXI. ;)

It's an interesting point about the community, though. They do say that Alliance-side WoW on a non-RP server has one of the most... Umm... What's a good word... 'Distinctive' communities of any MMORPG. But then, I've not really encountered this myself, mostly because I don't think I've ever grouped with more than one or two people at a time. And that leads to the question of what the point is of soloing through and MMO...

I'm rambling. I'll shut up now.

Been playing WoW for a long time now.

In a small guild with some real world friends, and we are all (more or less) in a nice big raiding group.
