Hoorah for the superbowl
Feb. 3rd, 2006 03:19 pmWell, I'm not working on monday so it looks like I'll be up til silly hours watching the superbowl instead. Woot! :)
To be honest I'm not even sure who is playing but I do like american football (though not watched any in years) so I'm looking forward to it. Anybody care to let me know who is playing and who the favourites are?

all in the hands of the receivers :) (Pun most definately intended)

Date: 2006-02-03 03:45 pm (UTC)Steelers Offense is in the hands of second-year QB Ben Roethlisberger, who was drafted after Eli Manning and Philip Rivers last year, but has already taken the Steelers to two championship games (they lost to the Patriots last year) and is the second youngest QB ever to start a superbowl. (Dan Marino).
The big story of the superbowl is Jerome Bettis - running back for the Steelers. Playing in his first Superbowl, in what is probably his last year, in his hometown of Detroit, Bettis - "The bus" - has had a superb career, and a Lombardi Trophy would crown it.
For the Seahawks, Coach Mike Holmgren is the fifth coach to take two different teams to the Superbowl (Packers 1996 and 97). QB Matt Hasselbeck was traded from the packers in 2001...
One of the key areas is how well the Seahawks offensive line - anchored by pro-bowl tackle Walter Jones and pro-bowl guard Steve Hutchinson - copes with the 3-4 defence (3 linemen, 4 linebackers) of Pittsburgh. Expect the Seahawks to go spread offense (3 or 4 wideouts) to try to force the LBs into coverage - not something they do well. Seahawks have only played one 3-4 defence this year (Cowboys) and though they one that game, it wasn't good.
Shaun Alexander was this years league MVP, and the Seahawks will attempt to establish the run, though few have been successful running the ball against Pittsburgh this year.
Rookie LB Lofa Tatupu has been the big story on D for the Seahawks. The Steelers are primarily a running team - Rookie Willie Parker is their main threat, and is a quick, slashing edge runner. When they throw, look out for TE Heath Miller, WR Hines Ward and trick plays involving WR/Occasional QB Antuaan Randle-El.
Seattle have had some special teams issues that might rear their heads in the Superbowl, as well.
Wow
