holiday

I am thinking that this summer I should actually do a proper holiday. In recent years the closest I've come to a real holiday is a trip up to scotland to see friends. And while not a bad thing I feel the urge, now that I have a real job and can afford it, to take some time off and do something properly holidaylike. Thing is I'm not sure really what I want. I feel the urge to go abroad since I've not done that in far too long. I'm thinking probably america (partly because I'm not sure I want to go somewhere I don't speak the language and partly because I've been planning to go there for ages). But my thinking has got no further than that.

So I guess I should ask if anybody has reccomendations for places in america to go or if any of the few americans who may be reading this want me to come visit their neck of the woods.

Oh, and if anybody else is pondering holidays but with no real plans then let me know.

Oh, and I reserve the right to mooch around in the UK instead of doing anything like a real holiday if I choose to. :)

Rather depends on what you want out of a holiday, but I can recommend both Chicago and Colerado.

Chicago is an excellent city for a week or two's break. There's a lot in the way of museums, art galleries and so forth for culture if you want some of that, there's good shopping, there's fantastic eating, beaches, excellent architecture, there's always something happening at the weekends in Grant Park in the summer and there's a wide variety of events of one sort or another going on. I would imagine that all the above is probably true of both New York and, for that matter, several of the other major cities of the US, but I can only really speak from experience with regards Chi Town.

Colerado has the one thing that Chicago doesn't, and that's awesome countryside. If you're in the mood for the great outdoors, a road trip and perhaps some motel work or camping, then a week in the Rockies is hard to beat. Here's a picture of the Maroon Belles, taken about half a mile from where I camped last year.

well, god knows that you've earned Good Karma from me if you end up in my neck of the woods... but there are probably places more exciting in America to visit...

I mean, Seattle is quite pretty and it's three hours from me... Vancouver, BC in Canada is supposed to be nice as well...

Texas is horribly american and very different than what you're used to... The "downside" of Seattle and the rest of the NW is that (according to Sally) it's very similar to the UK in some odd way.

I'd recommend Sally in general as having good travel advice for both america and the world at large...

I recommend you and me go to New York and see [livejournal.com profile] condign.

I say you and me because I too need to plan a proper holiday for the year, and also really want to go to the states, and have as yet not made any plans. Whatcha reckon? :)

Then again if you fancy doing the whole independent travelling thing, that's cool - I'll just go to Canada and visit my web-artist friend instead. :)

Guess I'll let you off then. Just make sure you ask him before you turn up on his doorstep and find he's actually in the UK or some such thing. :)

New Orleans is by far the best US city I've visited but as (IIRC) you're neither a foodie nor a Jazz/Blues/Zydeco fan, it might not have the same appeal to you.

I can definitely recommend San Francisco -- although as I've only been to the US once, I may be biased. SF has the great advantage that the "centre" bit is small enough that you can easily walk around everywhere. The city has a very relaxed vibe with lots of cool things to see and do, and interesting topography.

We then drove up the coast to Mendocino, looking at redwoods and the like, and then down through the wine country. Excellent holiday all round.

[livejournal.com profile] killalla can tell you more about it tho.

New York is fabulous. Also my friend PRs a whole load of restaurants over there (including Nobu, although she was very unreasonable about giving me a free meal there;) so I can give you some good recommendations.

Otherwise, San Francisco, which is my probable holiday destination this year. It's one of my favourite cities in the world:)
