I was thinkign about which star wars film is best. Its always been a hard choice but I think I'm going to say the original, Episode IV - A New Hope.

Its got a great ending, a great story the whole way through and such wonderful ideas and characters.

So am I right or do you think its one of the others and if so why?

I hear the Christmas Special is very very good, but I've never managed to get my hands on a copy.

only if you define 'good' as so bad it's funny.

It's awful. :)

Empire Strikes Back. A new Hope is good for the self-contained, more upbeat than down story, and more gung-ho action. Empire always struck me as deeper, more involved, as well as having its share of action.

Plus the revelation regarding Luke always stands out in my mind. The attack on Hoth, equally superb.

Seconded. ESB is by far my favorite film of the trilogy.

I'm not sure that it's actually possible for many people on LJ _not_ to respond to a post with Star Wars questions in it. I would think obscure fact ones will get fewer posts, but will guarantee replies from those who do know the answers...

ESB, complex, character filled, expands the universe in a number of great ways... best duel ever and the revelation!

I'm utterly unqualified to answer this as i've seen them all of once that i can actually remember, plus i should be working, so I reckon VI because IV had too much Luke whining, but then, i like Ewoks, so yeah...VI with the original end music though, cos James made me listen and I agree I prefered it, after he stopped humming it and actually played it instead that is. My Star Wars education is somewhat limited, but I know which music I like :)

It's a tough choice between Empire and Return- Empire has Hoth and is the darkest of the three, whereas Return is pretty much one large battle on the ground and in space and there is the classic fight between Good & Evil, whilst all around that a "Win or Die" fight rages. Return also has the classic scene between Luke and Obi Wan over points of view.

Return. For the lightsabre fight, now I know the one in Empire is good, and more imaginative and more excting in an action sense, but the one in Return has not been matched in any of the other four so far for sheer visceral intensity. The direction, the acting and my fucking god the score build one of the most effective one on one confrontations ever filmed. Plus the first proper space battle, by which I mean a fleet action rather than a desperate one off fighter mission or skirmishes, happens at the same time, including the enduring image of an entire battlefleet having a simultaneous 'oh bugger' moment.
I have to say though, from the trailer, fool that i am, I'm prepared to give Episode 3 a chance when in comes out, I doubt it'll surpass any of the originals, but I feel that ist may give the whole cycle a constant gradient of improvement.

Oh, and the Ewoks may have been cutesy, but they still managed to be the most blatantly politica/satyrical bit in the entire trilogy, and a very effective one.
