Well, I thought I'd give anther snapshot into what I've been doign since its been a good weekend so far.

Skiing with Work

Friday was the start of the weekend and a work awayday thing. It meant an earlier start than usual since I'd agreed to pick a couple of people up from work (the opposite direction than my final destination) but I managed that and at about 10:20 was at the Tamworth Snowdome. I'd been skiing once before with school about 13 years ago (give or take) so I thought that I might be able to ski but decided it wouldn't hurt to have lessons, especially when I wasn't paying for them. :)

So we kitted up and headed out onto the slopes for our lesson. I'm glad I took the lessons. I was a bit all over the show when I first started and although I think that I probably would have remembered how it works fairly quickly I might have been thrown out for incompetence before it came back. As it was we had a two hour lesson which was very good.

We started off with putting on the ski which was scarily hilarious. One ski and half of us were all over the show. The other ski and there was a lot of teetering and wobbling, largely because the bit we were on was not flat and we were all trying to not move while the skis had other ideas.

As the lesson went on we practiced one footed skiing for balance, doing little jumps and then onto snowploughs and eventually how to stop. I can't help but think that last one came a little late into the lesson but I'm no expert. By the end it had all come back to me. The actual skiing came back pretty much immediately, it was the moving about while not skiing that I found hard.

I'm now qualified to go for their level 3 and 4 lessons. I'm not sure I'll bother to be honest since as far as I can tell its just more of what we were doing. Level 3 was something like more snowploughs and turns. Level 4 was more snowploughs and turns from higher up the slope. I think I'm probably able to go on the slope (as long as I'm careful while I get my eye in again).

Afterwards I was aching quite a lot. I think largely from the walking up and down the slope in between each of the exercises we were doing. I didn't hang around for lunch which given the traffic on the way home anyway (at about 1:30) was probably a good thing. It took about twice as long to get home and then I got home and had lunch (first meal of the day - oops).

Friday Evening - Anime

I'd considered goign to london in the evening to roleplay but in the end decided that I was quite knackered, I couldn't be bothered to drive (even if I knew were to park near the venue) and public transport seemed too much effort while aching. So instead I decided to go to animesoc. This meant some catching up with the stuff I'd missed the previous two weeks. So I watched some anime at home (fallign asleep due to minor exhaustion during one episode) and then went into town. Where I finished catching up with the anime that I'd missed with [livejournal.com profile] taigne. I briefly saw [livejournal.com profile] luciefoulston and then headed on to animesoc. Much good anime. Paranoia Agent is great. Full metal alchemist is too. Galaxy angel I always forget how funny it is until I see it and I can't really explain why it is quite so funny. Fafner was OK and Card Captor Sakure is kinda cool sometimes.

I missed most of the bonus episode of Rose of Versailles, due to trying to copy some anime. I had to leave the room to do it since I'd bought my laptop along but realised that I had left the volume on full and my laptop doesn't have a physical sound control so when it turned on it was going to really loudly do the windows starting thing. :) What little I did see of it looked quite good though so I might have to look into watching more at some point.

Afterwards I went to G&Ds with people and discovered white chocolate ice cream which was nice and yummy. Mmmm... Chatted to people and reminded myself that although I am quite familiar with anime that I have a long way to go before I am a true anime geek. I think this is probably, on reflection, a good thing. :)

Saturday I woke up at about 11 and, having told people I would go FLRPing dragged myself out of bed to go to the pub to meet people. There were loads of people there, many of them people I didn't recognise. All of them were nice though. :) Oh, and for those unfamiliar with the acronym FLRP (probably all those not from oxford) it stands for Fantasy Live Role Play - what most people call LARP. Don't ask me why we're different. We just are... :)

It's been about 5 years since I last FLRPed. I missed an entire campaign and the first two (ish) years of this one. Still, that kind of thing never matters with FLRPing. Its a lot more complicated than I remember it as being. Well, more precisely its a lot more complicated than it used to be, its nothing to do with my memory. :)

I could probably have played if I wanted to. The PC were largely the new people but I decided that I'd just monster. Far easier and means that I can have even more XP on my first character when I start it (oops, my powergamer side is coming through again). I have ideas for a character as well. If I get it statted up sometime then I'll be able to play it when I get there. Its a fairly simple system though so its more a matter of writing things down. :)

The game was a lot of fun though. Was very nice to use properly made latex weapons rather than the ones we used to use back in my day (which was a good chunk of the reason why we played at night, I'm sure). Costume was quite common and very good where present. Mainly because a fair few people are hardcore LARPers and bring far too much stuff and lend it out to people.

I got very muddy throughout the afternoon. Fortunately not cold despite all the snow due to the new glvoes and woolly hat. I was amused to note that it was colder in the wet woods than it was in all the snow while skiing. The muddiness was largely self-inflicted though so I shouldn't really complain. I am just a big believer in falling over when dead. This was fine generally but there was oen time when it was very muddy on the floor... Still, I do think its better than just sticking your hand in the air and saying "I'm dead" so I don't regret it. Those who didn't fall over are just wusses.

AFterwards it was back to the pub for socialising and then onto pizza hut for food and socialising. It was muchness of yummy though I reckon I could have polished off more pizza. More meat and less vegetarian I think is the key for next time. :) And stuffed crustyness is good. And I've just realised I underpaid because we would have paid extra for the stuffed crustness. Though... (thinks slowly) actually, it just means i undertipped... Actually, no it means I gave exactly a 10% tip. Go me! :)

Saturday evening: birthday parties

After pizza I went home to get myself showered and chagned to go to the birthday party of [livejournal.com profile] triskellian and [livejournal.com profile] accasha. There was a theme of london underground or something similar. As always the effort I made in costume is beyond words. I turned up late and made a lame attempt to justify my lack of costume as being "well, I turned up late, that's good right?". [livejournal.com profile] verlaine (think it was him anyway) helped refine this when he pointed out that I was all in balck and thus the northern line. Sof rom that point on I raised the occasional smile by saying I was the northern line, all in black and turning up late.

It was nice to see people as always and there were some of the lovely ladies looking very nice which I always approve of. I ended up there til nearly 3 (I think) before heading back, giving a few lifts on the way. I think I've decided that the world needs more parties.

Sunday: not a lot

Had a nice lie in today. Mooched around, had breakfast, watched some yu-gi. Then I remembered I needed to get a new numberplate for my car - the front numberplate has had a letter and a half snapped off. So I went shopping and while there got a phone call from caroline which was nice. Didn't chat for much but she reminded me that there was a game on down in reading which was annoying. I'd have liked to go to see people there (i've decided I'm not goign to go to any more cam games for the game, just for the people) but it was far too late by the time I found out about it. For reference to those people who would have liked me to be there when I said earlier int he week that I had no idea what I was doign I really meant it, I'd have said there if I knew it was going on. :)

I tried to call [livejournal.com profile] quisalan but she never seems to be answering the last couple of times I've tried to call her. Either that or I only remember the last few when she has faield to answer and all the other times when she has answered I've now forgotten so that I can produce my erroneous statistics. Was hoping to see her since I havent' for a while but that plan seems to be out the window.

I suspect what I shall do instead is catch up on Tivo (three stargate and then I'm uptodate I think) and make myself some dinner with bacon in. mmmmm... bacon. Might make myself a cheese sauce as well since we have lots of milk and I haven't had one of those for a while. Yes... that is my plan. And its a good one. I suspect there will be nobody in the area wanting to come round and suffer my cooking and stargate. Do give me a call thogh if you want. :)

Hooray! Very cheering indeed to hear that FLRP is still continuing in Oxford and that it still accepts {players|monsters} with appropriate, if tangential, connections for occasional games. FLRPing at Oxford is one of the high points I have experienced in my gaming career and something I would deeply like to do again some day. (Trouble is, I'm almost always only ever down for OxCons these days, and OxCons tend to have games of their own on Friday nights. (Stick 22nd-23rd January in your diary already!)

Glad that the tube party was a hit! What other costumes were there? Strangely enough another friend of mine went to a completely unrelated tube-station-themed party on the same night. He wore his spangly silver jacket and went as Silvertown (technically cheating, but found favour).
