Assuming you know what didn't work then its because if you actually go to the url then the page is a meta refresh to the page that registers the following of the link. Therefore it needs to be properly parsed and the refresh followed.
I'm now looking at behaviors. A way of hopefully getting JS to work on livejournal despite it stripping all the javascript out of messages. It uses script in style type places. See http://www.planetvenus.org.uk/behaviors/sort.html for what I was trying (IE only I believe). Unfortunately the behavior file needs to be on the same site as the html file I think. So need to work something else out there...
I believe that the meta redirect is dynamically generated. I think it does stuff with cookies and things or something. Basically though to get the url that it refreshes to I'd have to parse the page for each person that views it to present them with a suitably unique url. I think anyway, I quickly got bored and decided to start play8ing with behaviors. :)

Though I htink I'm unconcious again. I don't have the time to keep up and actually play. Just trap people.
