Its that time of year again. Anybody able to suggest any nice insurance places for my car? Online places would be nice so I can get a few quotes before I get home to ring around places this evening.

In case it is relevant to a reccomendation I'm 25, 6 year old toyota corolla and 6 points on my licence (both sets of three from fixed speeding penalty).

I know about elephant.co.uk (which gave me a quote that was better than the AA managed).

Shout if there are any other good ones you can reccomend.

I switched to kwik-fit this year, after about 5 years with direct line, mainly because they gave a nice chunky discount, and cheaper vehicle rescue. Direct line have since dropped their prices again, so they'd be my recommendation.

How odd. The AA beat elephant for me, with free AA membership too... (28, toyota carina, 3pts on licence from SP30). Must be the postcode lottery again. Or maybe the cover - I've only got 3rd party fire & theft cos it's an old car ;-)

One minor point regarding online insurance though - I did exactly the same last year (to come up with the AA) and every single one of 'em has now spammed me with large HTML emails reminding me my car insurance is due, would I like another quote. A minor annoyance, it's true, but I can rant if I like ;-)

Oh, absolutely! There's all sorts of different organisations registered at halsby.com as well, so I know (for example) that New Scientist gave out my details to The Economist and (strangely) Fortean Times.

All I was saying is that CarInsurance@Halsby.com has been rather active one year on from filling out a lot of comparative webforms... ;-)

I've vowed never to use the AA again. Many years ago I ended up with a court summons because the AA claimed I didn't have insurance through them when I was trying to claim for an accident. As unique as this sounds, since I've published my views on the subject 4 other people have come to me with exactly the same thing. In my case when I got the court summons I rang up the AA (again) and said that I had in one hand a court summons for lack of insurance (raised by the police when they rang the AA to confirm the policy number) and the insurance certificate in the other hand. I said that I was going to ring watchdog as soon as I got off the phone. The next morning I had a fresh claim form in the post and two days later I had the money. No apology, no promise of compensation. I appeased Mr Policeman with a photocopy of the insurance certificate.

In short, I'm trying to get everyone to boycott them for this disgusting behaviour. If it had just been me I wouldn't have thought twice about it, paperwork cockup etc, but the way it was handled makes me think that they were trying to avoid paying out.

Anyway. Tesco. That's where I get most of my cheap quotes from. And it's a rebadged Direct Line service so you get all the crap that Direct Line give you with their insurance.

I get my insurance from Churchill - just experiementally tried getting a quote from elephant and, while it's £20 cheaper, I get free breakdown cover from Churchill.

Mind you, I'm probably a sufficiently different demographic from you that it's not relevant :)

I think that they all generate quotes with a random number system. I think for the last few years I have been with Egg, MoreThan and Norwich Union. Each one has been the cheapest of the quotes when I went for it, and was not the next year. The AA gave me a laughable one in 4 figures. Oh, and whoever claims to "quote you happy" are severly out, being almost twice as much as the others this year.

Also, if "quote me happy" works so well then why don't the Samaritans use it?

It's Norwich Union. And if the adverts are to be believed, the only information you need to give them is the colour and body shape of your car. I really want to phone them and say 'I have a green hatchback', 'No, I don't need to tell you anything else, I've seen your adverts', etc ;-)

Try Budget.co.uk and directchoice.co.uk - Direct Choice will be pants if you have more than 2 years' no claims.

I got my best quote for my Rover from (wait for it) Endsleigh. Actually, I filled in their web form, got an OK quote. Then they emailed/voicemailed me saying they could probably improve on that, and did. Give them a go - it's also handy having them on the High St, so I could just drop in my documents in my lunch hour when the postal strike was on. :)

hello chris..
