Its been pointed out to me that my Exalted game doesn't have a better name than "my exalted game" or maybe "my dragon blooded game". This doesn't really bother me but I thought it might be nice to have a nice snappy name. And not because somebody pointed out I was being a hypocrite for saying their game needed a snappy name.

The main problem with this otherwise fine plan is that I am pretty bad with coming up with character names, let alone names that work well for an entire campaign, which isn't that far in yet.

So what should I look for in a name? Well, it has to be something that sums up the campaign. If its something random it would be a bit pointless really. It also has to be something that doesn't give away too much. If I called it "The Solar Anathema Menace" or "The solars strike back" or "the return of the empress" then it would give away the plot. So I need something that is relevant but not revelatory.

Also I want something that fits the exalted theme. I'm considering names with things like "dragon", "lotus", "crane", "resplendant" and all those sorts of things that have the eastern kind of sound that I always think is exaltedy.

I'm vaguely tempted by "The Lotus Road" because it is a kind of cool name. It doesn't have any obvious meaning really which is what I'm after and it's kind of fitting in a strange way. I think I'll work it out when I next sit down and start thinking hard about plot for the game. Maybe on Sunday or Monday or something. I think it needs another adjective in there somewhere. Must find my bumper book of chinese sounding adjectives.

Well, for my money the campaign with the best name was [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's Fate of Mortals. Sounds very impressive indeed - and what it seemed to mean for most of the campaign was not what it meant at the punchline. Really clever stuff.

Well, it's possible that my interpretation is nothing to do with what he intended, so here goes:

All through the campaign I assumed that it was called Fate of Mortals because we were big important political types, our actions affecting the destiny of entire nations of people, all that bombastic stuff. But it turned out that the bloodlines of our PCs had been manipulated for at least a few generations by some troublemaker or other. I can't remember exactly what he was up to, but I assume part of it was to make us or himself immortals, because when we ultimately penetrated his lair and read his last message to the world the key line of it was:

the fate of mortals is to die

which is beautifully self-evident, of course. It was just great to learn that the keynote of the campaign was not obtaining infinite Power and Glory, but the learning of the lession of humility. I thought it was great, anyway.

Hmmm...

Names of Chinese groups, ministries etc are fruitful indeed in their inspiration value.

Just think of the Prefect of Flinty-Hooved Horses, or the Minister of Long Roads, The Ministry in charge of Prolonging Autumn. The Red Eyebrows, the Righteous and Harmonious Fists, the White Lotus...

I hate to rain on your parade (and The Lotus Road is a cool name and all) but whatever you call it I'm still gonna refer to "the next dragon-blooded session"... :-(

So your original "About a year" estimate was complete bobbins then ?

Nah, don't finish early on my account - I want to see what happens ! It would be a crime if the game stopped before we discovered what the PCs millions of "mystery plot" dots all represented !
