More weekend here
May. 29th, 2002 05:40 pmWell, friday was reltively unexciting. I went down to see people at the pre-FLRP (Fantasy Live RolePlaying) meetup. Was quite fun and nice to socialise with them all. Learnt some stuff about rainbows too which is obviously good. :) Ended up with krystyna and caroline trying to persuade me to actually FLRP (which I had said I wasn't going to) which was quite enjoyable. Not sufficiently so to persuade me to go though. That having been said I must find some way to manipulate them into trying to persuade me to do something again... :)
Saturday I was due to go home. I was planning on doing so earlyish but ended up playing Halo until about 4PM (I'm on second last level on heroic level). Then I went home, had dinner with parents and sister which was nice. one thing I should say is that every time I go home I find I have forgotten how loud my sister is. When she first came in the house it is hard to describe it but I almost rushed downstairs cos I thought somebody was in pain. It might sound odd but you probably had to have been there (or maybe just met my sister) to understand what I mean. :)
It was my dad's birthday on monday and I think he decided that saturday night was his birthday meal since he hadn't expected me or katharine home (she moved out a few weeks ago). Little did he realise that we had plans for the next day... :)
Saturday evening was fairly quiet. Chatted to family, read a book and went to bed pretty much. It was a nice evening even though it left me distinctly worried that I wouldn't have time to catch up with everybody. :)
Sunday was largely spent packing up my room as I mentioned. My parents are moving and I have a cupboard full of miniatures that I haven't touched in about 5 years. I have a hell of a lot and it must be worth a fair few bob. I have no idea about the best way to sell it though so I am considering a quick sale for a lot less than it is actually worth. Unless anybody would care to suggest better ideas?
Sunday evening I caught up with a few of the old school chums. Caught up on what we were all doing and what some other people were doing. Then reminisced on some old times and did the old nostalgia thing. Caught myself thinking whistfully about some past occasions and had to re-anchor myself in the present at one point rather than drifting off on sea of memories.
Monday night I went into Reigate to meet Agi and Judit and a couple of my brother's friends. Here is where the strange moral thoughts came in. I'm fairly sure that nobody relevant reads this but if they do then you didn't hear this from me, alright? :) Agi ended up having sex with another bloke there. Not a bad thing in itself she is single but he isn't. He is very much engaged. He was drunk and maybe stoned (I can't remember if he got stoned before or after) and seemed to feel guilty afterwards from what my brother said. Not too bad you might be thinking everybody makes mistakes. However, last time I was around he did exactly the same thing. Ended up sleeping with somebody else whilst being engaged.
As far as I know his fiancee doesn't know about this. The thoughts going through my mind are a) I don't think twice is particularly forgivable but is once? If once is then why not twice? b) Should he tell his fiancee? c) He is a friend of my brother and I said I'd try to make him feel guilty to try to make him not do it again. My brother's response was "I don't know her that well so why should I make my friend feel bad?". Not an entirely unreasonable comment. d) Would it be any more or less acceptable if his status were soemthing other than engaged? on the upside to married or on the downside to just going out with? Clearly I don't think there is a problem if he were single.
The matter stuck in my mind for two reasons. one because it was something that I seemed unclear of my own thoughts on and the relative rights and wrongs. Secondly because it reminds me of another situation closer to home. And before anybody wonders no, it isn't similar enough that you will guess who it is. :)
Any thoughts on these matters will be much appreciated... :)
Tuesday (aka yesterday) was a fairly busy day. I went up to london to do lunch with an old friend called matt. We went into a cool pub called the "Bell book and candle" which was a horror style pub (not that horrifying but quite cool). Had a nice lunch and caught up on stuff and chatted. Hadn't seen matt for years so it was good to see him again. Phoned steve and arranged to meet him at 5 after he finished work for the day and then I went to kill time.
Travelcard led to some bus hopping as I mooched towards trafalgar square to check out the Project Gotham racing tracks. A few things slightly off (raised pavement across the track in the one I was particularly looking out for) but generally very cool and very accurate. Arcades in the trocadero for a bit (Gauntlet Legendas or whatever the latest thing is called), Silent Scope ex (which I really love atm), pod racing which is always fun if nothing else for the control system and Star Wars Trilogy arcade where I got to blow up a death star or two.
THen went to meet up with steve again, losing the buses due to road works and I think me walking down the wrong street. Oh well. Underground served me well. I still seem to be able to navigate london fairly competently. :) A few drinks with steve including much star wars talk. I shall run more of my star wars game and it shall be glorious. :) I might even get around to introducing my own plot rather than having them run around doing things to do with the main existing plot (formation of rebel alliance in my own way and discovery of first hints of the death star construction).
I ended up getting late to gemma but she didn't seem to bothered which was good. We went to a creperie (sp?) and got pancakey goodness before walking miles and miles to a place for dinner. Burger and cocktail later and we were on our way to the next pub. Called The Bram Stoker (or something like that). It was another horror themed pub, quite possibly of the same chain as my lunchtime pub, and was very cool. The best things were that the toilets were behind secret passages. :)
And now an explanation of the deadly sins I mentioned before. The pub has seven deadly sin cocktails. I told gemma we had to drink them all between us. They were out of wrath but we managed the other six. Envy was probably nicest (perhaps aptly) and I think it was Greed that was the worst (tequila never being a big fave of mine). By the end of the evening I think we were both quite tipsy but it was a fun night of chatting and having a laugh. And I even know what gemma is doing for her phd thingy now. :)
The way home was fun. I got to victoria at about 11:30 thinking I had plenty of time, only to find that the last train to caterham was at 7:15. Slight panic before I came to the conclusion that london bridge probably ran them later and I could do the usual pickup at east croydon. Sat in the 1st class and read my book all the way to east croydon and then 20 minute wait for caterham train (which fortunately did exist). Was going to be lazy from caterham and get a taxi home but there weren't any so I walked.
Had trouble waking up this morning but eventually roused myself and left home at 9:15 for work. an hour fortyfive later I got into work and had one thing to do. The stock levels were wrong in the website. After a quick check it was because they were sending us the wrong data and that was all the critical stuff for the day. Yay! go me! :)
And now I am going to go home. See Leanne this evening and then head to panic after that. Should be fun. :)

(no subject)
Date: 2002-05-29 02:12 pm (UTC)No way I'm every getting rid of them all, though. It's far too big a part of my past.
Oh, and on an unrelated topic. I wouldn't get too stressed about this guy cheating on his fiancee. For some people, engagement is the bit of marriage before all the logistics of a wedding are feasible/sorted. But there's a whole spectrum from that right over to people for whom it's barely more commitment than making 'em breakfast the morning after.
Even marriage is different things to different people. At least one of my friends runs their marriage in a way that horrifies me somewhat, but it seems to work, so fair enough. And another friend of mine dated a married man for a while. He was a nice bloke, I GM-ed him for a game once.
In the end, people get bitten by their own mistakes. That goes for this guy and his fiancee. If you spend your life trying to stop everyone who crosses your path from getting into trouble, you're going to be very busy indeed !
Horror Pubs...
Date: 2002-05-30 12:55 am (UTC)We had a London Cam game at the BellBook and Candle I think... the toilets are hidden behind bookcases and you get odd noises from the speakers in there. And weird experimental glass cases with things in. Very strange place :)
