Well, everybody who cares heard the news by now. Loads of my LJ have already commented on it. However, I was just drawn attention tot he following link which is a nice little story:

http://www.metafilter.com/69599/HP-1#2033579

And in some comments after that somebody said:

"When gangsters die their friends pour out some beer from a forty for their "homie". I'm guessing the nerd equivalent in this case would be to pour out some kool-ade from a bedazzled plastic goblet?"

And I thought, no. Nerds would give some of their XP over for his next character. So I'm putting that idea out there. If you're in a game and you feel an urge to do something slightly random, utterly meaningless in practical terms but kind of nice in that woolly spiritual way then go on and give a few of your XP over next time you earn some in a game. :)

Not having played such games, I didn't know you could give people some of your xp. Or are you suggesting just removing it from your own total?

There are no useless skills.

A much derided and curiously hated character, by comparison Greg Stafford who has commited far more acts of ego stupidity on gaming just gets the sobriquet of Greg'ing.

I think I'll go dust of Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun and see if I can get a handful of players together, that or Barrier Peaks:)

Most useless skill I've ever encountered was "Large War Elephant" (GURPS).

It's useless because not only are there no rules for it, the skill doesn't even make any sense.

(It's a long-running Cambridge posse in-joke.)

Whereas I would regard the most horribly overpowered skill in any system as being, 'Making Tea: specialisation in NATO'.

then a skill entirely inappropriate for the character and the current campaign

Give up your xp? Noone could expect such a sacrifice. That would be more like gangsters cutting their wrists and pouring out a few pints of blood. Except that blood doesn't level you up, and there are *never* enough points.

Well, I think it's a great idea and am suggesting it for my D&D group. But someone should keep a tally of all the XP that has been donated, so we know what level Mr Gygax will be. Wouldn't want a 20th-level character emerging at birth without anyone getting a heads-up first!

What worries more is the potential geek euphamisms for death.

"Failed his final saving throw" is possibly the best.

Shouldn't that be geeks?

Although I guess geeks are too practical to donate XP.
