Eve fun

Last night I spent playing Eve. There was a big planned mission with a bunch of us from the same Corp (corporation for those wondering about the abbreviation) all flying out to one of our bases and running some missions from there. At times there were more than 15 of us flying around blastin stuff. Some people complained about lag but I didn't see any during the fighting really. Nor crippilingly so anyway though there was a bit.

There's not a huge amount to say on it really. There was some good co-ordination though it could have been better. I suspect we needed to split up more into squads so that we had a bit more focus on what we were doing. Basically the smaller ships were there as a fighter screen in essence and I think we'd have done better to concentrate fire better than we did so that rather than having five mostly dead ships we could have had one healthy ship and four totally dead ones.

We had a teamspeak server which was cool. Basically its a voice server that you log into and can chat to people in that way that is so trendy nowadays. I have no mic so I couldn't talk but it was still useful to be able to hear what other people were saying. And to put some voices to people too. :)

It was a really good night all in all. My ship went pop at one point but I think myself and one other were the only people to lose ships. And the guy organising it had made sure there were plenty more ships available so I was only out of it for the time taken to head back to base, get into a new ship and then head off again. Still annoying because my first ship was called Azrael's Flame which is a cool name. And yes, I can rename my new ship (whose name elludes me right now) but I feel once a ship has been named it shouldn't be renamed.

It was a good learning experience and a lot of fun. And I played around with taking screenshots. Oh yes. I can't be bothered to do the whole nice album thing (I really need to get round to sorting this out at some point) but I have done some resizing so you have a choice of sizes to go for...

"photos" of the op can be found by going to http://the.earth.li/~chris/eve/ and if you want smaller then go look in the med or thumbs directory for smaller versions to decide if you want to look at larger ones. The big ones are 1680x1050 for the most part which is my full screen res. Its lovely. :) Some of the shots are a bit messy because they are not as well posed as they might be. I need to practice more. :)

My favourites are:

http://the.earth.li/~chris/eve/2006.01.30.22.22.26.png - the "tank" heads into the mission through the acceleration gate

Nifty looking. How good are games at coping with widescreen generally? I am thinking of going and splurging some cash, and it would be good if I can still keep playing my RTS games :)

Sounds like 1) it was a lot of fun and 2) Yal needs some RAW training ;-)

Definitely need to split the squads into Wings with Commander ordering Leaders and Leaders ordering their respective Wings. It's easier when you're flying ships you're comfortable in and know exactly what you can and can't do. Initiative on the part of the wingmen is a godsend provided it's balanced with primary duties with the Wing Leader.

Well RAW uses wing assignments like Red, Gold, yadda yadda. Primaries are called when absolutely needed, as are specific groups - in particular which ones NOT to aggro! You saw some of that when you joined in our last group op :-)

Hmm... Well, I have actually tried Eve now, and I can see how it really should be very good...

I haven't quite managed to get into it yet. Maybe I'm still in mourning for SWG. :(
