Over the weekend I found time to write out saturday and sunday of Ayacon. Its big so make sure you get a cup of tea or whatever before you start to read. :)

So, the next day my alarm goes off nice and early. Different DJs but independant radio stations all have the same feel and this one (I don't remember the name) reminded me so much of fox that I kept being mildly surprised that the jingles were different.

Anyway, after a lot of internal whinging to myself about how early it was I eventually got up, sorted myself out and was out of the room to go find myself a full english breakfast. I found it in the restaurant and it was pretty good. I'm not a fan of mushroom and similar stuff but it was good to have bacon, egg, sausage and some toast. AFter that I wandered off, feeling more awake, to my first anime of the day.

Unfortunately, I was not really awake enough. I had intended to watch "Initial D 4th Stage" which is an anime about car racing. It was one of the committee reccomendations and it looked very pretty so I thought I'd go see if it was any good. So I went over to Video Room 1 and sat down. However, I for some reason had a big mental block and several times over the weekend went to VR1 when I should have been elsewhere. This time I ended up sitting down in front of Uta Kata.

A very unusual take on the magical girl genre, in whcih clinically depressed schoolgirl Ichika meets her alternate-world double, and together they use the power of the Djinn. Ichika soon starts to realise, however, that however useful this power is to solve other people's problems, it cannot solve her own... and what is waiting at the end of her summer vacation will bring nothing but the pain of an inevitable parting.

I must admit I am a bit of a closet "magical girl" fan as long as its a bit more interesting than the formulaic sailor moon type of thing. So this grabbed my attention a bit. One of the things that intrigued me is an implication that the events of the series (girl from other world comes to make friends with girl from this) have happened before with the older friends of the main heroine. The implications are not worth going into but its *another* that I want to try to pick up a few more episodes of. The implication is that it is a relatively short series (perhaps a 13 episoder) in which case I will quite possibly watch it all. :)

After this I decided to head to the Games Panel. This was given by a few people who worked in the computer games industry for the benefit of those interested in it. There was not a lot else on and given I know people in the industry I thought I might as well go along. I was surprised by some of the things that they said like that its virtually impossible to get to work in the games industry without having a portfolio already. I thought of rebellion and the fact that to the best of my knowledge they are happy to employ people with no games programming experience. Then they talked about the huge teams of 50 odd people they put on computer games and again I felt surprised since I'd always got the impression from friends that it was less than that. Then again, one of the guys was an EA employee (working on Harry Potter games) so maybe they weren't really very typical.

After that I wandered around to do some shopping. I bought the FF7 wall scroll that I liked (its lovely) and also in a flash of nostalgia and interest ended up buying a model Gundam. It was one of those that comes in kit form and clips together (no glue required) and is in fact a little Chibi Gundam (Wing Zero Custom since at least one person will know what that means). It was the cheapest they had at 6 quid and I actually am really glad I bought it because I really enjoyed making it.

Anyway, I killed time for a bit more, probably by going and lurking in ops (Operation centre - where the con is run from) where I tended to go when I was at a loose end.

Anyway, time passed and I wandered off to be on duty watching "Shuffle!".

In a reality where the world of Gods, Demons and Humans have overlapped, high-school student Run has classmates from both of the other realms... nothing could prepare him, however, for the discovery that not only are the two new transfer students the daughter of the Kind of the Gods and the duaghter of the King of the Demons, but that he has been chosen as a marriage candidate for the two! Now, not only must he somehow pass his entrance exams, but he must somehow choose - between inheriting the power of the Gods, the power of the Demons... or his childhood friend. A great high-energy, fun romance/comedy series.

Not particularly inspiring. An unusual setup and some good characters mean that it looks set to be a pretty good anime sitcom/soap opeara. Not one that I feel desperate to go out and download but one that is possibly worth putting on when you want some anime without much plot. :) Oh, and one of those annoying ones where the lead guy has no idea that his best friend is absolutely in love with him. Almost annoyingly so. :)

So then I had an hour break before I was working once again so I decided to head back to my room to drop my shopping off. I had the great plan of just putting them in my car (nearer) until I realised I'd left my car keys in my room so back to the room it was anyway. So, after some shuffling and faffing (I realised I probably had more stuff in the room than was easily carryable to the car the next morning when I had to leave my room) I headed back to find some food.

Food consisted of a panini. A quite nice one though. Cheese and ham and, lets be honest, you can't go wrong with that really. After lunch I headed up to ops to get myself gopher food (they have chocolate and cans of drink and stuff) and headed down to VR3 for Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (another one where I went to VR1 first only to realise that they weren't showing anything at all).

The magical girlfriend genre takes on a dark, disturbing twist with the arrival on Earth of Dokuro-chan, an angel who has taken it upon herself to protect sakura, a boy with an unfortunate name... and an even more unfortunate destiny. Especially after he meets Dokuro, whose angelic appearance belies the fact that she carries a very large spiked club called Excalibolg, whoch she uses on a regular basis to decapitate, batter or merely disembowel Sakura. After which, she resurrects him using her angel powers... and does it again. The bastard offspring of Angel Rabbie, South Park and Saikano, Dokuro-chan comes highly recommended.

Dokuro-chan was brilliant. It was really messed up and hilariously funny. Its comparison to South Park was very apt and I can't help but wonder if the makers had actually watched South Park. Sprays of blood all over the place and a very casual approach to Sakura's regular death. I really can't describe the surreality of this program (such as the pupil at school turned into a monkey which nobody seems at all bothered by). I will be downloading this and inflicting it on anybody who gives me an opportunity.

One problem with it though was that it was hugely popular. More popular than the committee expected (though I have no idea why since it was clearly going to be popular) which meant that they put it in probably the smallest of the video rooms. I'm glad another gopher had put his name down for the slot as well so there were two of us on duty. Every seat in the room was full, people were sitting on the steps and people were standing everywhere they could. There were also a lot of people coming in and out which meant lots of having to check people's badges (every con-goer had a badge to prove they'd paid their money) and having to stand by the doors with the worst view of the screen *ever*. I also got some free lemonade because drinks aren't allowed in and when I told a nice girl this she told me I could help her finish it. I'd have taken it as a chat up line if not for the fact she was wearing a "junior" badge (ie under 18). Actually, I probably wouldn't have done, the thought never actually occured to me but I thought I'd try and make myself out to be a babe magnet. :)

I did at one point end up wandering up to ops to check if there was a limit to the number of people allowed in rooms (I know that there are sometimes fire regulations that say you can't overfill rooms). The conclusion to that little question was that the warwick university staff around could worry about that and we'd empty out if they complained. Fortunately they didn't.

I killed some more time, looking at the other dealer's room and generally wandering around. There were actually two dealer rooms, you see and it took me a while to find time to look for the other one. It wasn't as interesting though, I didn't think. Or perhaps it was just uninteresting because it was more of the same.

Four o'clock rolled around and I went to watch Suzuka in VR3.

Schoolgirl drama with mysterious goings on.

A pretty short description for an uninteresting and unmemorable anime. Not even particularly accurate description for what I saw and remembered. I seem to recall it as being "Boy moves into aunts female dorm house where he meets high jumping girl he fancies". That's about as interesting as it got. If you still want a reccomendation I fell asleep during the second episode.

In all honesty I was actually quite tired (up at 8 on a weekend will do that to me) so after that finished at quarter to five I decided to take a lie down for fifteen minutes. The masquerade was at five though so I didn't want to chill out for too long. As it was I dozed on the sofa for too long and woke up at ten past five. Luckily I have discovered that masquerades never start on time so all was good and in fact I even had plenty of time to help out.

The main room being used for this needed preparation and there was video stuff and all that gumph. So the crowds were waiting outside to be let in. I wandered around and started trying to organise things that looked like they needed it. Mainly people were faffing a bit about letting people in the top doors in (that weren't generally in use) and whether to get people to queue up outside them. I didn't do much apart from be a bit bossy and tell people to do what they were pretty much doing already. I guess it was around this point that I realised that I was older than a lot of people and so a bit more used to, well, bossing people around and in general doing this kind of thing (years of DCing in cam have paid off I guess).

Anyway, after a while we let people in and the masquerade started. The masquerade, for those not familiar with the concept, is basically a chance for all those who are cosplaying to show off their stuff. Cosplaying, for those not familiar with the concept, is basically dressing up like your favourite anime characters. So everybody sits down and all these people in cool costumes come out give us a twirl and move on. Sometimes one (or more) people have a bit of a sketch to do. Sketch wise there were several good ones including a final fantasy one complete with people under sheets playing the blobby monster things (flans is it?). There were also some good AMVs including the wonderful AMV attack of the catgirls one. I've seen a torrent link for it on the forums so I will, at some point when I get a net connection, download it. Unfortunately my camera wasn't really that up for the job of taking photos of the masquerades because of how far away I was and the light levels. I'm hoping that photoshop might be able to do something about that. However, a lot of the people weren't actually turning in my direction (I was quite off to one side) so I didn't even get a view of them. I did however every now and then stop random people as they were walking around to take photos so I do have some cosplayer photos (which are on my uninterneted computer still).

Anyway, after all that was done my little list that I wrote that evening on what I did has me written down as "gophering". I can't really remember exactly what this involved but I suspect it was generally being helpful around the gopher type area. Or possibly just chatting with other gophers. Anyway, at 7 I went to be on duty for Xenosaga.

Based on the popular RPG, Xenosage is a SF epic that tells the story of humanity's expansion into the stars, driven by the power of the Zohar Engine. The power of the Zohar, however, has called out to an alien race known as the Gnosis, and now as humanity faces its greatest threat, genius engineer Shion Uzuki and Kos-Mos, the humanoid weapon she developed must work together with a band of renegades to unravel the truth behind the actions of Joahim Mizrahi, the so-called madman who unlocked the secrets of the Zohar. Despite suffering from terrifyingly bad character designs and poor animation, the plot and characterisation make this a first-rate SF series.

I really liked this. Its an anime that starts with a very intriguing setting whcih gives you a lot of questions, the main key one being what the heck are the Gnosis and why are they trying to kill people. I really want to see more of this, again, one to torrent when the internet connection finally appears. I don't know if it will appeal to everybody but it looks like a good plot heavy mecha type anime. I'd also quite like to get hold of the computer game but i think somebody said that it was PS2 (the one I don't own) and not released in Europe. Oh well.

I then killed a bit of time while waiting for the next anime to start: Emma.

A victorian-era romance story set in London, Emma tells the story of a maid girl who falls in love with a member of the gentry. Whilst their feelings for each other grow, the caste divide between them cast as ever-lengthening shadow over their relationship. A heart-warming series that comes highly recommended to anyone looking for something a little different from the usual anime fare.

I saw this one on the list and wondered if this was going to be another in the line of classic literature turned into anime in a similar way to the wonderful "Agatha Christie's Famous detective Marple and Poirot". I was introduced to that anime last year at Amecon and so this year Aya seemed set to present Emma. In all honest being not that well read I don't know if it is based on that old book but I think it likely.

It was actually a very well presented story. The end of each episode even had a "Here's something you didn't know about victorian culture". The one I remember covered the importance of a girl's "coming out" ball, when she first joins the social scene and presents herself as elligible for marriage.

It was a good anime, not sure its one I'd watch all of but recommended for those times when you want something more off the beaten track. One that I'll probably download and leave unwatched on my hard drive (as has been the fate of Marple and Poirot).

AFter that I went back to ops were I chilled with people. I'd marked out some other stuff that I wanted to see but I felt like socialising so I sat around and talked to people. I had attempted to find somewhere for food first but everywhere, including the burger place (McDonalds quality burgers) had shut at 9PM. That sucked quite a bit and was one of the downsides of the venue, no late night eateries.

So in ops we sat around and chatted and then for some reason somebody was looking at what was playing in video room 4. A brief aaside on the technology was that the whole place was running off computers and they were all networked so ops could VNC into any of them to see what was going on. This meant if there were issues that they didn't need to run down to video rooms (except in severe cases of which I think there were none). So, we were up in ops and somebody was looking at Video room 4 and some of us looking over their shoulder went "What the hell is that?". So for a minute or so we watched "Cutey Honey" in about three seconds per frame. And then Ben said "Hang on, I've got a local copy I can play" at which point we put on Cutey Honey on the Ops room computer.

A hilarious, ridiculous special-effects-laden battle between adorably ditzy (retarded) magical girl Honey and the ancient evil of Sister Jill and her evil minions, Panther Claw (with added rice balls).

To say that we were watching it would be wrong, it was more there as something to laugh at in the breaks in the conversation. Also somebody came up with the bright idea of pizza and so the gophers got a pizza delivery in which was a godsend. Domino's sent us over four large pizzas that got finished off pretty quickly. At 11 I ended up heading down to VR3 for Super Robot Taisen since nobody was down to gopher for it since it was a reschedule and I figured it sounded kinda fun.

Based on the massively popular games, Super Robot Taisen takes mecha and characters from a variety of well-known anime (such as Gundam and Evangelion) and throws them together to form a kind of huge mecha katamari.

Well, to be honest it was a bit sucky. It was really there just to have a lot of fights and contrary to the description I didn't recognise any characters or mecha. That might have just been me being crap though there was somebody Ithought looked a bit like Asuka from Eva (assuming I am remembering name correctly) though the character itself was completely different so I'm not convinced. It was an odd plot that seemed to come to no resolution whatsoever. It finishes with them fighting off one attack of a massive assault and then... well, it stops dead. Very anti-climatic. It wasn't even like it was part of a series from what I can tell. Still, it passed the time. Definitely one I am not going to even think about downloading. :)

Then back to ops where I found Cutey Honey was still playing though apart from that things were much the same with the same usual suspects there. There was actually another program in VR4 but after *Everybody* had gone I decided I couldn't be bothered to sit in a room on my own watching an anime that wasn't of much interest to me.

Everybody chatted for a bit more and then people decided to call it a night (and the building ops was in got locked up at midnight anyway I think). I wandered meanderingly home via stopping and chatting a bit. [livejournal.com profile] aquapixie was wanting to go find somebody in the club hosting the jpop party but had a big box of stuff so I forceably wrestled it off her despite her protestations that she didn't want to bother me, so she could wander into the club without a box of "Cabbit on a stick". I chatted with people for a while and then at around half midnight probably ended up wandering back to my room as various people headed off in various directions.
